Best Tattoo Stencil Paper (2026): Spirit, Phomemo and Budget Packs
The best tattoo stencil paper for thermal printers, copiers and hand tracing, with what to look for and how Spirit compares with cheaper A4 packs.
As an Amazon Associate, Free Stencil Maker earns from qualifying purchases. It costs you nothing extra, and it never decides what makes the list.

The best tattoo stencil paper for most people is Spirit Classic Thermal in A4. Spirit is the brand most artists already use, it works in thermal copiers and stencil printers, it can be traced by hand, and the A4 size suits the printers most of us own in the UK. If you're buying on a budget, or you own a Phomemo printer, Phomemo's own 100-sheet A4 pack does the job for around £20.
Whatever paper you buy, the file you print matters more than the paper. Free Stencil Maker turns a photo or drawing into clean, single-colour linework that's ready to print onto stencil paper, for free.
A quick word on safety before the list. Tattooing people is a job for trained artists working with sterile, single-use equipment. If you're learning, use practice skin, not a mate's arm.

What to look for in tattoo stencil paper
- The right type for your method. Thermal paper needs heat, so it goes in a thermal copier or stencil printer (or gets traced with firm pen pressure). Freehand, or hectograph, paper is made for drawing on by hand. Inkjet stencil paper only works with stencil ink in a dedicated printer. They aren't interchangeable, so match the paper to how you'll make the stencil. Everything on this list is thermal paper, because that's what most people need.
- Sheet size. A4 covers most work and fits most UK printers. Go for 8.5 x 14 inches if you do large pieces, because joining two stencils on skin is a pain. Just check your printer can feed it.
- Printer compatibility. Portable printers can be fussy about paper thickness and size. If you own one, check the listing names your model, or buy the printer maker's own paper. My guide to the best tattoo stencil printers covers which printers take what.
- Line strength. You want a dark purple line that transfers in one go and holds up while the artist works. Faint transfers are the most common complaint about cheap packs.
- Ply and how it feeds. Most thermal paper is four layers: a white top sheet, a thin protective tissue, the purple carbon and a backing. Some packs need a layer removed before printing, so read the instructions.
- Cost per sheet. Stencil paper is a repeat buy. A box that costs twice as much but transfers cleanly first time can still work out cheaper than redoing stencils.
The best tattoo stencil paper
1. Spirit Classic Thermal (A4): best overall
Spirit has been making tattoo transfer products since 1946, and its purple thermal paper is what most shops reach for. This is the same paper in A4, which is the size UK and EU printers and copiers are built around. It's the safe choice if you're not sure what you need, because it works in thermal copiers and digital stencil printers, and you can still trace on it by hand.
It has 4.6 stars from over 680 ratings on Amazon UK. The usual complaint about Spirit is the price, and there are a lot of imitations sold through third-party sellers, so buy from a listing sold or fulfilled by a known seller. If you're new to it, my guide on how to use tattoo stencil paper walks through which layer goes where.
Key specs:
- A4 sheets
- Spirit Classic thermal paper
- Works with thermal copiers, stencil printers and hand tracing
Good: industry standard, reliable dark lines, right size for A4 printers. Not so good: costs more than generic packs, imitations are common, check the sheet count on the listing.
It's around £43 ($43) in November 2026.
Check price on Amazon2. Phomemo A4 transfer paper (100 sheets): best budget
If you've got a Phomemo stencil printer, or you just want a cheap box for practice, this is the one to buy. It's made by the printer brand for the M08F, so it's sized and weighted to feed through without jamming. At around £20 for 100 sheets, it works out at about 20p a sheet.
It's a 4-layer sheet and has 4.5 stars from over 2,000 ratings on Amazon UK. It also works for hand tracing with a ballpoint. You'll still need a transfer gel or solution to put it on skin.
Key specs:
- A4, 100 sheets
- 4 layers
- Made for the Phomemo M08F
- Can be traced by hand
Good: low cost per sheet, made for the printer many beginners own, A4 can be cut down for small designs. Not so good: not the Spirit standard many artists trust, best matched to Phomemo printers.
It's around £20 ($28) in November 2026.
Check price on Amazon3. Spirit Classic Thermal (8.5 x 14, 100 sheets): best for big pieces
This is Spirit's thermal paper in legal size, three inches longer than US Letter. That doesn't sound like much, but it's the difference between one stencil and two on a forearm, a calf or a back panel. It has a perforated backing for easier handling, and Spirit says it works in all thermal and digital stencil printers.
Two things to know. It's 8.5 inches wide, which is a touch wider than A4, so check your printer or copier can feed it before you buy. And on Amazon UK it was down to its last few boxes when we checked, so stock may come and go. It has 4.6 stars from over 2,300 ratings on Amazon UK.
Key specs:
- 8.5 x 14 inches, 100 sheets
- Perforated backing
- Works with thermal copiers and stencil printers
Good: fits large designs in one stencil, same trusted paper as the A4 box, very well reviewed. Not so good: wasted on small work, not every A4 printer takes the size, pricier in the UK than the US.
It's around £70 ($51) in November 2026.
Check price on Amazon4. Acejoz (120 sheets): best bulk pack
If you're practising a lot, you'll burn through paper, and Acejoz gives you 120 sheets for around £27. That's about 22p a sheet, close to the Phomemo box, with an extra 20 sheets. It has 4.6 stars from over 1,400 ratings on Amazon UK.
The listing itself says to press harder when tracing by hand, which suggests the carbon layer needs a firmer line than Spirit to come through. In a thermal printer that matters less.
Key specs:
- 120 sheets
- Thermal transfer paper
- Firm pressure needed for hand tracing, per the listing
Good: lots of sheets, low cost per sheet, well rated. Not so good: needs more pressure by hand, not a professional brand.
It's around £27 ($21) in November 2026.
Check price on Amazon5. Cridoz (50 sheets): best value small pack
Cridoz is the cheapest way in. You get 50 sheets of 4-ply thermal paper for around £10, which is about 20p a sheet. That's ideal if you've just bought a printer and want to check it feeds properly before spending more on a big box.
It has 4.5 stars from over 1,200 ratings on Amazon UK. If the test prints come out dark and clean, it's a cheap repeat buy.
Key specs:
- 50 sheets
- 4-ply thermal paper
Good: lowest outlay on the list, enough sheets to test a printer properly, well rated. Not so good: generic brand, smaller pack means buying more often.
It's around £10 ($8) in November 2026.
Check price on Amazon6. WeLiu A4 (35 sheets): most reviewed
WeLiu has more ratings than anything else here, at 4.6 stars from over 5,800 on Amazon UK. It's 4-ply A4 thermal paper, and you can cut sheets down for smaller designs so you're not wasting a full page on a small piece.
The catch in the UK is price. At around £17 for 35 sheets, it's nearly 50p a sheet, more than double the Phomemo or Cridoz packs. In the US it's a budget buy. Here, it's the pick if you want the paper with the longest track record of buyer feedback rather than the cheapest.
Key specs:
- A4, 35 sheets
- 4-ply thermal paper
- Can be cut down for smaller sheets
Good: huge number of ratings, A4 size, easy to cut down. Not so good: small pack, expensive per sheet on Amazon UK.
It's around £17 ($6) in November 2026.

Stencil paper alone won't stick to skin well. You also need a transfer solution, applied to clean skin (or your practice skin) so the purple lines grip and last while you work. Stencil Stuff is one of the best-known brands. I've covered gels and practice skin in the tattoo stencil starter kit, and the full method, from prep to peeling the paper away, is in my guide on how to apply a tattoo stencil.

How we picked
These picks are based on manufacturer specs, what stencil paper actually needs to do (feed cleanly, transfer a dark line, last on the skin), and Amazon UK ratings and buyer reports. I've put Spirit first because it's the paper tattoo suppliers stock as well as Amazon, which is a decent sign it's used in shops.
We checked availability and prices on Amazon UK on 3 November 2026. I haven't tried these products hands-on. Prices move often, so check the current price before you buy.
FAQ
Can I use normal printer paper for a tattoo stencil?
Not for the transfer itself. Plain paper has no purple carbon, so nothing goes onto the skin. You can print your design on plain paper first, then put it through a thermal copier with stencil paper, or trace it onto the stencil paper by hand.
Which side of tattoo stencil paper do you print on?
With four-layer thermal paper, the design goes onto the white master sheet and the purple carbon layer transfers it onto the back of that sheet, reversed. Which layers you remove before feeding depends on the brand and machine, so check the pack. My guide to using tattoo stencil paper covers it step by step.
Is Spirit paper worth the extra money?
For most people, yes. It's the paper most artists learn on and it works in nearly every machine. If you're only practising on fake skin, a cheaper pack like Phomemo or Cridoz is fine.
Can I put thermal stencil paper in an inkjet or laser printer?
No. Thermal paper reacts to heat, not ink, and it can jam or smear in a normal printer. Use a thermal copier or stencil printer, or trace it by hand. If you want to use an inkjet, you need inkjet stencil paper and dedicated stencil ink.
How long does tattoo stencil paper last?
Kept flat, sealed and away from heat and sunlight, a box generally lasts a long time. Heat is the enemy, because thermal paper can start to darken or transfer weakly if it's been stored somewhere warm.
