Best Mylar Sheets for Stencils (2026): Thickness, Finish and Size

The best mylar for stencils on Amazon UK: 4, 7, 7.5 and 10 mil blank stencil sheets and rolls for Cricut, laser and hand cutting, with prices and what to buy for each job.

As an Amazon Associate, Free Stencil Maker earns from qualifying purchases. It costs you nothing extra, and it never decides what makes the list.

Best Mylar Sheets for Stencils (2026): Thickness, Finish and Size

For most people, the best mylar for stencils is a 7 mil milky PET sheet like the neglex 7 mil 12 x 12 pack. It's thick enough to reuse plenty of times, thin enough to cut by hand or on a cutting machine, and the frosted finish takes pencil. If you want the cheapest way in, the BANLTRE 7.5 mil 12-sheet pack costs around a tenner and is the most reviewed mylar pack on this list.

Whatever you buy, the stencil file matters more than the sheet. Free Stencil Maker turns a photo into a clean, bridged stencil file for a laser or cutting machine, for free.

What to look for in mylar stencil sheets

  • Thickness. Thickness is sold in mil (thousandths of an inch), not millimetres. 4 mil is about 100 microns (0.1mm), 7 mil about 180 microns, 7.5 mil about 190 microns and 10 mil about 250 microns. Thinner sheets cut easily and bend round curves. Thicker sheets last longer and sit flatter, but they're harder to cut and lighter home cutting machines struggle with 10 mil.
  • Frosted or clear. Frosted (milky or matte) sheets take pencil and marker, so you can draw or trace straight onto them. Clear sheets let you see the surface underneath, which helps when you're lining up the layers of a multi-layer stencil.
  • Sheet size. 12 x 12 inches fits a standard cutting machine mat. Bigger walls, furniture and signs need bigger sheets or a roll. Check the size of your laser bed or cutting mat before you buy.
  • Material. Real stencil mylar is PET (polyester) film. Check the listing says PET or polyester, especially if you're laser cutting. Some cheap "plastic stencil sheets" are PVC, and PVC must never go in a laser.
  • Food safety. If you're stencilling cakes, cookies or coffee, buy sheets the seller describes as food-safe, wash them before use and keep them only for food.

The best mylar sheets for stencils

1. neglex 7 mil Milky Mylar Sheets: best overall

If you only buy one pack, make it something around 7 mil. It's the thickness most stencil makers settle on because it does a bit of everything: it holds fine detail without flopping about, it lasts through plenty of washes, and you can still cut it by hand with a sharp craft knife. These are 12 x 12 inch PET sheets with a milky, translucent finish, so you can draw a design straight onto them.

The listing describes them as food-safe and suitable for both cutting machines and laser cutting. That makes it a sensible pack for walls, furniture, fabric and the odd batch of biscuits. It has 4.6 stars from over 400 ratings on Amazon UK.

Key specs:

  • 7 mil thickness (about 180 microns)
  • 12 x 12 inches, 10 sheets
  • Milky translucent PET
  • Sold for cutting machines and laser cutting, described as food-safe

Good: Suits most jobs, takes pencil, fits a standard cutting mat, reusable Not so good: Only 10 sheets, 12 x 12 is too small for big wall designs, costs more per sheet than the 20 pack below

Around £14 ($8) in November 2026.

2. BANLTRE 7.5 mil Milky Stencil Sheets: best budget

This is the cheapest pack on the list and it isn't a compromise on thickness. You get 12 milky PET sheets at 7.5 mil, the same all-round weight as the best overall pick, for around a tenner. It's also the most reviewed mylar pack here, with 4.6 stars from over 1,300 ratings on Amazon UK.

I'd pick this if you're learning, making a first multi-layer stencil, or want spare sheets for test cuts before you commit a design. The frosted finish takes pencil, so you can still trace by hand.

Key specs:

  • 7.5 mil thickness (about 190 microns)
  • 12 x 12 inches, 12 sheets
  • Milky PET

Good: Lowest price here, most ratings, all-round thickness, takes pencil Not so good: No food-safe claim in the listing, 12 x 12 only, fewer sheets than the 20 pack

Around £10 ($9) in November 2026.

3. neglex 10 mil Milky Mylar Sheets: best heavy-duty

10 mil is the thick stuff, for a stencil you'll use over and over, like a logo, a floor pattern or a sign. It sits flat and survives a lot of cleaning.

The catch is cutting it. Hand cutting 10 mil is hard work, and you really need a Maker-class cutting machine or a laser to get through it cleanly. My guide to the best cutting machine for stencils covers which Cricut and which blade to use. If you're cutting on a laser, work with proper ventilation and an extractor, because cutting any plastic gives off fumes. The laser cut stencils guide goes through settings and safety.

UK stock was on a 3 to 4 day dispatch at the time of writing, so order ahead if you've got a deadline. It has 4.6 stars from over 700 ratings on Amazon UK.

Key specs:

  • 10 mil thickness (about 250 microns)
  • 12 x 12 inches, 10 sheets
  • Milky translucent PET
  • Best cut on a Maker-class machine or a laser

Good: Very durable, sits flat, ideal for repeat use, cheap for the thickness Not so good: Hard to cut by hand, too thick for lighter home cutting machines, stiff on curves, slower dispatch

Around £12 ($9) in November 2026.

4. Gnomeshgh 7.5 mil Mylar Sheets: best value 20 pack

If you make a lot of stencils, or you're cutting multi-layer designs where every colour needs its own sheet, a 10 pack disappears fast. This Gnomeshgh pack gives you 20 sheets at 7.5 mil, so you pay well under a pound a sheet, much less than either neglex pack. It's also the highest rated pick here, at 4.7 stars from over 350 ratings on Amazon UK.

The listing describes the sheets as food-safe and sells them for Cricut and laser cutting. That's a good fit for anyone who switches between paint stencils and cake or cookie work, as long as you keep a separate set for food.

Key specs:

  • 7.5 mil thickness (about 190 microns)
  • 12 x 12 inches, 20 sheets
  • Sold for Cricut and laser cutting, described as food-safe

Good: Cheaper per sheet than the neglex packs, highest rating, food-safe per listing Not so good: Bigger upfront spend than a 10 pack, 12 x 12 only

Around £18 ($13) in November 2026.

5. Qulinshine 7.5 mil Clear Sheets: best for big stencils

A 12 x 12 sheet runs out of room on a headboard, a wall border or big lettering. These Qulinshine sheets are 12 x 24 inches, so you get double the length in one piece, and you can still cut them down to 12 x 12 or 6 x 6 when you need smaller ones.

They're clear, which earns its place on multi-layer stencils. You can see the first coat through the second layer, so lining up is much easier. The downside is that clear film doesn't take pencil well, so use a fine permanent marker or cut the design on a machine or laser. A full 12 x 24 sheet needs a long cutting mat, so check yours before you buy. It has 4.5 stars from 350 ratings on Amazon UK.

Key specs:

  • 7.5 mil thickness (about 190 microns)
  • 12 x 24 inches, 10 sheets
  • Clear, can be cut down to 12 x 12 or 6 x 6

Good: Double-length sheets, easy layer alignment, cut down for smaller jobs Not so good: Hard to draw on, needs a long mat for machine cutting, pricier pack

Around £22 ($17) in November 2026.

6. Retainbre 4 mil Clear PET Roll: best roll

Pre-cut sheets top out at 12 x 24 inches. A roll lets you cut a single piece as long as you need, with no joins, which is handy for wall borders and long lettering. This Retainbre roll is clear PET, 12 inches wide and 80 feet long.

At 4 mil it's thin and easy to cut, whether that's with a craft knife or a cutting machine. It also bends round curved surfaces like bottles and mugs. The trade-off is durability: thin film creases more easily and fine bridges can tear if you scrub them hard. Rolls can hold a curl too, so lay the cut piece flat under some books for a while before you use it. It has the fewest ratings here, with 4.6 stars from 56 ratings on Amazon UK.

For keeping big stencils flat and clean between uses, see how to make a reusable stencil.

Key specs:

  • 4 mil thickness (about 100 microns)
  • 12 inches x 80 feet
  • Clear PET

Good: Any length you like, lots of material, easy to cut, flexible on curves Not so good: Less durable than 7 mil, curls off the roll, clear so it's hard to draw on, fewer ratings

Around £24 ($22) in November 2026.

How we picked

These picks come from listing specs, what each sheet needs to do for stencil work (cut cleanly, hold fine bridges, survive cleaning), and star ratings read from the live Amazon UK pages on 3 November 2026. I haven't used every product hands-on. Prices move often and vary by seller, so treat the figures here as a guide and check the current price before you buy. Listings for unbranded sheets sometimes change thickness or pack size, so double check the mil rating on the page too.

Also worth knowing: Grafix Dura-Lar is a well-known polyester film from art shops, sold in matte pads and rolls. It's a solid choice if you mostly trace and hand cut, but I've kept this list to packs I could check on Amazon UK.

FAQ

What thickness of mylar is best for stencils?

7 to 7.5 mil suits most stencils. Go thinner (4 mil) for curved surfaces, long rolls and quick one-off projects. Go thicker (10 mil) for stencils you'll reuse a lot, and cut it on a Maker-class machine or a laser.

Some PET stencil sheets are sold as food-safe, including the neglex 7 mil and Gnomeshgh packs in this list. Choose sheets the seller describes that way, wash them in warm soapy water before first use, and keep a set just for food. Don't use sheets that have touched paint or spray adhesive.

Can you laser cut mylar?

Yes, PET mylar is commonly laser cut. Always use ventilation and fume extraction, follow your laser's material guidance, and never cut PVC or vinyl, which release corrosive, toxic fumes. If a sheet doesn't say PET or polyester, don't put it in the laser.

Can a Cricut cut 10 mil mylar?

A Cricut Maker is the machine to use for it, ideally with the Deep-Point Blade, and lighter machines often struggle. Thinner sheets (4 to 7.5 mil) are much easier on home cutting machines. Check your machine's materials list and do a test cut on a corner first. The best cutting machine for stencils guide covers the blade, and making a stencil with a Cricut walks through the full process.

Is mylar the same as acetate?

No. Mylar is polyester (PET) film. Acetate is a different plastic that tends to be more brittle and cracks more easily, which is why mylar is the usual choice for reusable stencils.
